FLOATING SAUNA, VILLA KAUNISVIRTA

Kaunisvirta riverside sauna – A wood-fired floating sauna for cozy evenings

Experience an authentic Finnish sauna at the Kaunisvirta rental cottage! A small floating sauna by the river is available to rent separately for €45/day alongside your cottage booking. This traditional wood-fired sauna offers a calming escape in the heart of nature — exactly where the hustle fades away and your mind can relax. After your sauna, you can take a refreshing dip in the river or simply sit on the pier, enjoying the soothing sounds of the surrounding wilderness.

A floating sauna without modern comforts – and that’s what makes it wonderful

The Kaunisvirta floating sauna is intentionally simple and full of atmosphere. There is no electricity or running water. The peaceful mood comes from the dim light and quiet surroundings – a perfect escape from the noise of everyday life.

Water for Steam:
Bring clean tap water from the main cottage. Do not use river water for steam – its high humus content causes unpleasant odors when heated on the stove.

Lighting:
Bring a candle lantern or flashlight if you’re using the sauna in the evening. There is no lighting in the sauna.

Firewood:
Firewood is available in the main building’s wood storage. Please remember to collect firewood before starting to heat the sauna.

Winter Use:
The sauna path is not plowed in winter. Use of the floating sauna during winter is self-managed and depends on your own access options.

A riverside setting that invites you to stay

Next to the sauna, right on the riverbank, there’s a small campfire spot where you can grill sausages or simply enjoy the calming sight of a live fire in the middle of nature. You’ll also find a small riverside pavilion with mosquito nets, providing shelter from both sun and insects. In the pavilion, there’s a small outdoor seating area – an excellent place for socializing, dining al fresco, or sipping evening tea while admiring the river view.

Sauna heating instructions

Heating a traditional wood fired stove is an essential part of the authentic Finnish sauna experience. A properly heated sauna rewards you with relaxing, gentle steam.

Preparation
Before lighting the fire, check that the firebox and ash pan are empty, and that the grate is clean. A clean stove burns efficiently and safely.

Lighting the fire
Use small logs and kindling. Do not use lighter fluid or other chemicals.

Heating the sauna
Gradually add larger logs. Allow the sauna to warm up calmly – heating time varies depending on the weather and firewood quality, but usually takes around 30 minutes to one hour.

Temperature control
The ideal sauna temperature is about 70–90 °C. You can regulate the heat through the stove and ventilation flaps.

Steam (löyly)
Pour water onto the hot stones sparingly. Always use clean water only.

After sauna use
Add a couple of logs to help the sauna dry out. Empty the ashes into the ash bin, sweep the floor, and bring in firewood for the next users. Wipe the benches with a damp cloth.

Pricing and reservations

The Kaunisvirta floating sauna can be rented for an additional fee of €45 per day. It is suitable for around six people and available year round, weather permitting.
