In the event of a power outage, you can check for possible faults on the Kymenlaakson Sähkö fault map.

🌡️ Heating and air source heat pumps

To save energy, the cottage temperature is lowered when there are no guests staying at the cottage. The temperature is automatically raised to the normal level at 9:00 a.m. on the day of check-in. During severe winter frosts, the cottage may initially feel cool if the temperature has previously been kept lower.

The wall thermostats are located next to the doors at a height of approximately 1.5 metres. The living room thermostat is next to the terrace door, behind the curtain.

If the cottage feels too cold:

  • Check that the radiators are switched on.
  • Check the wall thermostats and make sure the temperature is set to +20 °C.
  • Do not switch the radiators off completely.

Air-source heat pumps

Both the main building and the sauna building have air-source heat pumps in addition to electric radiators. The air-source heat pumps are controlled using remote controls.

  • The living room remote control is in a wall-mounted holder to the right of the fireplace.
  • The sauna building remote control is to the right of the exterior door.

When you arrive at the villa during the winter, turn on the air-source heat pump and set the temperature to +21 °C. Select the sun symbol in the MODE settings. When you leave during the winter, set the temperature to +16 °C.

You can use the air-source heat pump for cooling in summer if needed. We recommend setting the temperature to +25 °C.

Ventilation in toilets

The toilets and shower facilities on the ground floors of the main building and sauna building have exhaust fans operated by motion sensors. The fan continues running for a few minutes after use and then switches off automatically.

💧 Water, drainage and washing machines

Villa Kaunisvirta is connected to the municipal water supply.

Water supply to the washing machines

There is a dishwasher in the kitchen and a washing machine in the shower room of the main building. Before using either machine, open the washing machine water valve. The water supply to the machines is opened using the lever underneath the kitchen sink tap and the bathroom basin tap. Remember to close the valve after use. (Lever to the left = OPEN)

Important information about the drainage system

The cottage drainage system uses a macerator pump that pumps wastewater to the municipal sewer network approximately 100 metres away. Only human waste and toilet paper may be flushed down the toilet.

Do not put sanitary pads or tampons, wet wipes or paper towels, plastic or any other waste into the toilet. They may damage the macerator pump or block the drainage system.

Water leaks

If you notice a water leak, the water can be shut off using the main water shut-off valve in the utility room of the main building’s washroom.

🔥 Fireplaces and fire safety

Using the fireplace and sauna

The cottage has two fireplaces: a fireplace in the main building and a wood-heated sauna stove in the sauna building. The fireplace flue damper is located above the fireplace, and the sauna stove flue damper is located above the sauna stove.

Open the flue damper before lighting the fire. Use newspaper, birch bark and small pieces of wood to light the fire. You may also bring firelighters with you. Never use flammable liquids to light the fire.

It is important to close the flue damper only when the fire has completely burned out. Before closing the damper, stir the embers with a poker to make sure that they are burning out properly. When the flames have disappeared and only glowing embers remain, you can partially close the damper. Do not close the damper completely while there are still glowing embers, as they can continue to produce carbon monoxide. Close the damper completely only when the embers have burned out completely.

Empty the ashes regularly to keep the fire burning properly and to protect the grate. Ashes can be emptied into the ash containers located next to the sauna stove and fireplace.

Smoking

Smoking inside the cottage is prohibited. Smoke outdoors and use the ashtrays provided. Do not leave cigarette butts in the surrounding area.

Smoke alarms

The rental cottage has mains-powered smoke alarms. If a smoke alarm starts beeping briefly every few minutes, the battery may be running low. In this case, remove the smoke alarm, replace the battery and notify customer service.

Fire-fighting equipment

There is a powder fire extinguisher and a fire blanket to the right of the main building’s exterior door. In the sauna building, the fire extinguisher is located to the left of the entrance. Please check the location of all fire-fighting equipment immediately upon arrival. If you notice any deficiencies in the fire-fighting equipment, please contact our customer service.

Firewood

Firewood can be found next to the firewood storage area by the traditional barn or in the storage room on the left-hand side of the traditional barn.

📺 TV and HDMI connection

The cottage has a television with an HDMI connection. HDMI and other connection cables may not be available at the cottage. If you want to connect your own computer, game console or other device to the television, please bring the necessary cables with you.

🧴 Cleaning products, paper and other supplies

The cottage has:

  • Dishwasher detergent and washing-up liquid
  • Hand soap
  • Kitchen paper and toilet paper. If you are staying with a larger group or for several days, we recommend bringing extra toilet paper and kitchen paper.
  • Hand towels in the toilets and bathrooms and a kitchen towel in the kitchen

We do not guarantee that washing detergent, shower gel or shampoo will be available at the cottage.

🧹 Cleaning, bed linen and towels

Final cleaning is not included in the Kaunisvirta cottage rental. The cottage must be left clean and in the same condition and order as when you arrived. Even if you have ordered final cleaning, please make sure before departure that the dishes have been washed and put away, rubbish has been taken to the waste container, belongings have been returned to their proper places and the cottage is otherwise tidy.

Final cleaning

You can order final cleaning from us in advance or also during your stay.

  • Basic final cleaning €160
  • Full final cleaning €220, including kitchen cleaning and washing the dishes

Bed linen and towels

You can bring your own bed linen and towels or rent them from us for €20/person.

The rental set includes sheets, a duvet cover, a pillowcase and a bath towel. Rented bed linen and towels can be found in the wardrobe of the larger upstairs bedroom with a balcony in the main building.

After use, leave the rented bed linen and towels on the floor of the shower room in the main building. The cleaner will take them to the laundry.

🐕 Pets

Pets are welcome at Villa Kaunisvirta. Always inform us about your pet when making the reservation. The pet fee is €10/day/pet.

For more information about travelling with pets, see the Kotteria pet-friendly cottages page.

When staying with a pet:

  • Make sure your pet does not cause any damage.
  • Clean up your pet’s waste from the yard.
  • Report any damage to customer service immediately.

Mouse deterrents

From autumn to spring, ultrasonic mouse deterrents are used at the cottage. The sound is generally inaudible to people, but it may disturb dogs and cats. If you unplug the deterrents because of your pet, remember to plug them back in before leaving.

👶 Equipment for families with children

The cottage has a high chair in the dining area and a travel cot in the wardrobe of the larger upstairs bedroom with a balcony.

When setting up the travel cot:

  1. Press the long sides down.
  2. Press the ends down.
  3. Press the base down last.

When folding it up, do the steps in reverse order. Return the travel cot to the wardrobe after use.

Cottage sauna

  • Available year-round
  • Must be booked separately; €45/day
  • Do not detach the floating sauna from the pier.

For detailed information, see the Villa Kaunisvirta Floating Sauna instructions.

💦 Hot tub

There is a wood-heated hot tub in front of the sauna at Villa Kaunisvirta. The hot tub is available for rent by cottage guests. Filling, heating and cleaning the hot tub are not included in the rental price unless agreed separately.

🌿 Outdoor areas

🌊 Floating riverside sauna and private pier
🛶 Rowing boat
🔥 Campfire site by the river
🏡 Open grill hut with a fireplace
♨️ Gas grill on the terrace
🍽️ Garden furniture and outdoor dining area
💦 Wood-heated outdoor hot tub
🌿 Spacious terrace areas and river views

Gas grill and grill hut

There is a gas grill on the cottage terrace. Please check that the grill is in good condition before using it. You are responsible for using the gas grill safely. Never leave the grill unattended while it is in use.

Before lighting the grill, make sure that the gas hose is properly connected to the gas cylinder. Attach the pressure regulator to the gas cylinder by placing it on top of the cylinder and lifting the black plastic collar while pressing the regulator down. Then press down the collar and make sure the regulator is securely attached. You can check this by carefully lifting the gas cylinder by the regulator – if it is properly attached, the cylinder will lift with it and will not come loose.

Once the pressure regulator is securely attached, open the gas valve on the regulator.

To light the grill, open the grill lid. Turn the first control knob fully to the left and wait a few seconds for the gas to reach the burner. Then press the knob down lightly and turn it further to the left to activate the ignition. If the ignition does not work, lift one of the grill grates and carefully light the burner with a long lighter or a lit match. Always keep the grill lid open when lighting the grill manually.

The grill can be used all year round, including in winter. In cold weather, gas behaves differently and the grill may take longer to heat up.

Spare gas cylinder

There is a spare gas cylinder in the storage building. If you use the spare cylinder, please let us know so that we can replace it during our next visit.

Grill hut and open fire

There is a semi-open grill hut in the yard with a fireplace. After using the fireplace, always put the ashes in the ash container.

Do not make an open fire during a wildfire warning. Always follow the current instructions from the authorities.

🌊 Pier, beach, rowing boat and swimming

The Kaunisvirta shoreline is shallow and has a muddy bottom. There is a floating concrete pontoon pier approximately 20 × 2.5 metres in size. The water depth at the end of the pier is approximately two metres, and there is a swimming ladder with six steps. Please note that there are rocks in the river.

⚠️ Water safety

The water level and depth may vary. Always check the water before entering. Never dive or jump into the water.

Swimming is at your own risk. Children must be supervised particularly closely.

The floating sauna attached to the pier is available for an additional charge.

Do not detach the floating sauna from the pier.

🛶 Rowing boat

There is a rowing boat at the cottage.

Check that the boat is properly secured before use and every time before leaving it.

Keep the equipment in the boat in its proper place and return the boat properly secured after use.

🗑️ Waste management

The Kaunisvirta mixed-waste container is located along Strukantie in front of the cottage. Pack waste as compactly as possible so that the container can hold as much as possible. Do not leave rubbish outside the waste container. Close the lid carefully so that animals cannot scatter the waste.

The waste container is emptied approximately every two weeks. If the container is full, move any excess rubbish to the warehouse and notify us as soon as possible.

♻️ Recycling

The nearest recycling point is located behind the ABC service station in Pyhtää. Another recycling point in Kotka is located in the yard of Prisma at Hakamäentie 1, Kotka. Recycling points can be used for recycling, among other things, glass, metal, paper, cardboard and clothes.
